What a ride the past 8 months has been.

I feel so grateful for meeting and being in the presence of such immense creativity and talent.

We are going a little underground.

Surface POP is now back to our "original pop-up concept

"no fixed abode"

Where will we be holding our next exhibition?
You will have to follow our blog, check our website and facebook & Twitter, so you don't miss the location & address!

Back to that Vision of a Transformative space.

A "home base" will Rue de Fleurus Salon/Bar that we are opening in Gertrude street, that space is going to be off the hook, open fire, grand piano, a full kitchen set up for amazing chefs to do their thing, and of course a pretty fantastic Bar.

We want to run exhibitions in an event style manner, so they are totally embracing for the artist their profile and us. Mind blowing all encompassing, sensory overload kind of openings! Sometimes Collaborate with food, fashion, live street art, music, installation, performance.....

Surface POP will also function as an Artist Representative an Agency concept of sorts.

Like we have been doing with Be Free, but with other artists, both Street, illustrative, photographic, installation etc.... be the artist voice, this is especially good for street artists whose Identities are to remain completely sealed but are ready to balance some gallery exposure with their street work .

Surface POP as an artist representative will make connections and collaborations with other galleries, spaces and possibilities both interstate, national and overseas.

Surface POP will either run an exhibition as " Curated by Surface POP" in a specific gallery either as a collaborative project or just as Surface POP. Or just be the agent for the artist exhibiting under another gallery.

just a little tweaking and streamlining, and a little running under the radar for now.

From the moment I first laid eyes on Ryan's work, I got that "feeling" I just knew he had that something something.
Surface POP are very excited (actually quite beside ourselves!) too be doing Ryan's First Solo this Year, (dates to be released) with our new plans for Surface POP as a pop-up concept, we will find Ryan the most delicious space that he can transform to create, what I reckon, one of the most inspiring solos you will see for 2011.
Believe me, I've seen how this kids brain works, hes a maelstrom of awesomeness, and is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with. Im just a wee bit Proud......

Comida Bebe had a fantastic write up in The Age a few days ago and Surface POP got a small mention.

"This year, the guys participated in an Italy-versus-Spain cook-off at Arteveneta as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and collaborated on a pop-up art exhibition with Surface Pop, an organisation supporting emerging artists and designers"

The collaboration with these talented lads has been awesome and with our bar Rue de Fleurus opening in Gertrude Street this month Comida bebe will be fronting the first event with Passion Victims as part of the State of Design Festival

We got up early in the middle of the night

for missions

to catch planes

we ate on the go

drank to much coffee

had lunch with Shida, Beastman & Jae Copp in Surfers

we scoped spots

and got yelled at

hailed taxes

moaned about the cost

Those who know me well, know I can get pretty excited, dramatic like, last week I got to hang out with a few of my ultimate babe street artists, I was pretty calm (ish) trying to be proffessional (ish)

luckily I had already, had the pleasure of some personal time with my Guru Kaff-eine the week before, otherwise I may have just been a teenie weenie bit hard to understand (my kiwi accent gets thicker the more excited I get)

Surface POP is finally opening our door's to our new Gallery at T-Squat in a few weeks and to celebrate we are having an exhibition of some of Melbourne's most tantalizing, awesome talented and prolific female Street Artists at the moment!

Street Art Auction for Traditional Health Care in India

Melbourne based charity Traditional Healthcare are having a fundraiser in June with a focus on Melbourne street art. We are raising funds to build a sustainable healthcare facility in India.

Surface POP and Melbourne Street Art are helping with gathering works from the Melbourne Street Art Community.

We have been asking Artists to donate and become a part of this event...

I have a real personal belief in the cause, as my background is in Traditional Healthcare, Shiatsu, Oriental, Therapies and Yoga, I was already a member of this group before Melbourne Street Art approached Surface POP to be involved, it just feels so amazing to have two of my loves meshing, Street Art and spreading the love for Traditional Healthcare World wide!

Surface POP posse relocates residence

Its been a big week.... as well as shifting the Gallery......

yesterday we moved house, after living in a third story apartment for a few years, it's pretty exciting for the surface POP family to have a house with a vege patch.

As the new gallery is a few weeks away, I can't wait to get my hand in the soil and do some planting while I come up with some awesome exhibition ideas... I guess after all the boxes get unpacked....

Bye Bye St. Kilda...

Surface POP had our last Exhibition and final HOOYA on Friday night

It was a real mix of emotion for us, as this space has been wild and I feel rather attached, but in saying that - the next stage of our Journey with Surface POP is full of possibility and all about creating opportunities.

It's about Grasping that creative thought of each and every creative being I'm blessed to come into contact with hear, observe & read between the lines.

Its all about this incredible community of like minds that we are discovering....

In the words of William Burroughs......

"Nothing exists until or unless it is observed. An artist is making something exist by observing it. And their hope for other people is that they will also make it exist by observing it. "
So yeh..... that's my job in a nutshell :)

Opening night - Phoenix the Street Artist - IN HERE.OUT THERE Exhibition

I love this exhibition, we are very honoured to have this body of work in our humble little space.

Phoenix's work in the street and on the galley wall, triggers off a whole range of thought provoking questions, about ecology, nature, synergy, politics science, art...... and my personal fav the unconscious mind.

Its not just the content of his work, its the way he goes about doing it, analog styles, cutting and pasting (with glue and scissors not a mouse and a click) layering and texturising, bodies of work that could, and will still be something else entirely different from what it might have started out from, imagery that repeats itself through many different forms, he likes repetition... as Phoenix says 'it takes 10'000 hours of practice (repetition) to become a genius'
Some might just say Phoenix is that, a genius!

Dean Sunshine who is a LEGEND! organised Stella Artois as beer sponsorship and CASSETTE to do our epic layout and print job of the flyer.

Dean Sunshine has a great blog called Land of Sunshine that's ALL about archiving Street Art - he has done a post featuring a collection of Phoenix's pix on the street, many that are now hanging on the wall in the gallery space.

There has been a heap of Media around Phoenix's exhibition at Surface POP, including The Age, Beat Mag, Inpress Mag, Super Future, Life Lounge, T-Squat, many on-line blogs and a nice little wrap up from INVERT big ups from Deano, Phoenix and Surface POP for the props.

When I finally watched 'Exit through the gift shop' last night, I was in fits of laughter watching Shepard Fairey at the photocopy machine..... bit of a private joke..... but I totally think Phoenix should marry Office Works - or in the very least own one!

Aaron's finally finished the Wall Two 80 and it looks pretty great.

The Wall have recently renovated and the space looks like it has always been there, they now have a kitchen and are cooking breaky and lunch.

Rising from the ashes

I was thinking about why Phoenix the Street Artist chose his name, Phoenix rising from the flames and ashes - my train of thought lead me onto imagining if we all each chose an Alter ego, what mine would be?

A friend of mine who last year almost died from a bike accident came into see me at the shop today and showed me this incredible large scale tattoo she had got yesterday on her back and side, a Phoenix - when I asked, she said, its about rising from the ashes, the flames, new beginnings....

This week has been intense, my peep Robbie Warden, spent the day at the shop with me on Thursday and many times had to 'check me' because of my obsession with the Christchurch Quake websites, I had every site open on my laptop so I didn't miss a beat, I hadn't got a lot of pressing work done - my heart, my breathe, my thoughts, every part of me but my physical body was (and still is) in Christchurch.

My friends and family are safe, but the thought of them distressed or concerned for their future, breaks my heart,
what would my Alter ego do?

She would take her strong arms across the Tasman ocean, and hold them tight, she would hold the space for all of the tribe to heal, like a KORU - slowly unfolding it's frond toward the light, renewal.

Surface POP and Dean Sunshine are proud to announce Phoenix the Street Artist's first solo show!

IN HERE : OUT THERE

Phoenix, one of Melbourne’s hottest new street artists, presents 'In Here Out There'

from Thursday 10th March.

In 2004, the artist lost nearly all his collage-based works in a fire that tore through his studio.

Scouring through the burnt remains, he discovered some singed works had miraculously survived.

From these ashes Phoenix the Street Artist was born.

Seven years on, the burnt works, copies of his works from the streets, and brand new pieces will be exhibited

at ‘In Here : Out There’, his first solo exhibition.

Phoenix brings to the gallery wall the art of the street at the Surface Pop Up Shop in St Kilda.

Matt Yeates who started Sea surfboards in 2001 with buddy Dain Thomas is a Mulit talent in many artist mediums.

Matt has worked with many recognized shapers and artists (Bob Mctavish, Rich Pavell, Steve Lis, Dave Parmenter, Thomas Campbell, Alex Kopps…to name a few), making surfboards, clothes, doing art shows.

Matty Yeates co-made with Johnny Abegg the limited edition experimental film “___” (zine & DVD) that we have had as part of Surf Bike POP all immersion exhibition!

I have already posted some of Simon's incredible photographic works up from the Deus ex machina post I did a few weeks ago - you can check out.

Simon hails from Sydney and I was honoured when Simon agreed to take part in Surf bike POP, We admire him and hold him very highly as a Surf photographic artist - he's taken the time out to stay connected through email.

It's a real pleasure to have his work hanging on the walls at Surface POP

Reg Mombassa - Artist, Musician, Mambo legend

Reg Mombassa is a musician, painter, writer, poet, humanist.

He is also a founding member of legendary Australian rock band, Mental As Anything.

I pitched Reg via email about our Surf bike POP exhibition, he called me the next day and offered 5 limited edition prints - I was pretty contented after that phone call!

Reg has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and overseas. His work can be found in the permanent collections of every major Australian Gallery including the MCA in Sydney and the National Gallery of Australia.
Reg has worked closely with Mambo since 1986

When not painting or recording and performing with his brother, Peter in their band, Dog Trumpet.

Reg is a fellow Kiwi, a total Legend and has become a big part of Australian iconography.

Surf bike POP - All SURF immersion OPENING night - Floods, Fire and Famine

SURF bike POP - all Surf Culture Immersion

it was baptism by immersion for Surface POP by the Surf Water Gods!

After a smooth start to the evening with Slabs from Cricketers Arm Larger on ice and The Deus Ex Machina Motorcycle delivered, with pride of place, bodies started pouring into the gallery to get an eyeful of our amazing line-up, the space was jammed with hot beings after a muggy inner city Summers day, before anyone noticed the waves lapping at the door and the flood waters rising right on Carlisle Street, Ghost Mutt from the Surf Coast, where all set to play, and it was a MAD rush to get all their gear off the floor and too higher ground.

After the fire brigade came to check the small electrical fire we had, a few of us sat in candle light with a few bottles of red, (that had been stashed away for a "rainy day" :)) ready to go down with the ship if another Storm front came through. Nothing was damaged and we have been left with an opening no-one will ever forget.
Was it fortuitous to have the water lapping at the door of a Surf exhibition like this one - that has never been done in Victoria before? totally!

it's a Omen! :)

We keep hearing about loads of people who were on their way to the Opening when the storm hit, so come on down the exhibition runs it the 20th Feb - Support this great artistic culture!

What a couple of days!

I have been meaning to blog about all my artists but time has slipped into the vortex of surf immersion.

but do keep reading regularly as I intent to get though each and every one of my amazing artists over the next week, of the St. Kilda Fest.

props to my mate Robbie Warden [you probably know him quite well by now] Robbie did some media pitch today and got our press release into Australian Longboarding mag - on-line and because my email has been down for the last 24 hours [thanks bigpond!]
Robbie has also been following up my list of press contact - I am blessed to have him!

On the media note, a Journalist from the 'Age Newspaper' rang me today about doing an article on the exhibition..... it was one of those 'they followed me up' moments...
I'm been waiting for one of those!

Nicholas Chalmers - Artist, Graphic Designer, Film Maker, Innovator, Pro Surfer

I LOVE Nicholas Chalmers Work, I guess you might define [him in a way] as a "sub culture artist"

He teams intricate and detailed ink-work on wood along with pained canvases and also makes short films, he's known for his artistic collaborations both here and internationally.

Chalmers work presents humorous, quirky, often in a way that engages, entertains and provokes viewers.

Working as a Graphic Designer by day, Chalmers continues to challenge with his views and body of work in everyday "conventional gallery space" which is exactly what we are not - and why its an honour to exhibit him!

If you get a chance its well worth watching Chalmers surf, he has a certain "je ne sais quoi" you can see him in Johnny Abegg's film “___” its like a dance on a long board, amazing!

One last note - When Aaron and I saw this pic of Abegg, Heywood and Chalmers from ArtPark, I was determined to pitch all 3 - and I did and here we are!

Nicole Tattlersall - Stencil Artist, Illustrator, Surfer

The second of my two Women represented...

Nicole Tattlersall is a Melbourne Based Artist and has been creating works since 2006 and is most well known known for her stencil art, illustration and installation works.

Which lend themselves to convey the context of the piece and the overall feel of the work through a selection of mixed mediums, from the innocence and creative minds of two children to the dirty look created to interpret the streets of a busy city.

Nicole's style has changed several times throughout the years from simple outlines to her now exhibited urban inspired stencil and illustrative works. The use of stenciling as a technique came about when she wanted to start to customise her own surfboards.

Clare Plueckhahn - Photographer, Producer, Art Director & Film Maker

One of my two women represented!

Clare Plueckhahn came into the gallery and dropped of her work today, beautiful, fresh and full of passion!

Her work is stunning and her determination is second to none, this girl along with her fellow team mate Fran Derham started u a venture called Cos we Can and now they have a hit film on their hands that will be released on Feb 14th called First Love, they just got back from the USA where they won an award for Best Documentary at the X-Dance Action Short Film Festival.

With a Bachelor of Arts Photography from RMIT Clare has been operating as a commercial photographer out of C.I. Studios, Melbourne for the past 4 years. If you haven’t seen her work on billboards and metro lights around the nation you would have spotted her shots in publications such as ACP Magazines, News Magazines, The Age, Foam Mag, Pop Magazine and Australian Surfing Life. When she’s not working on commercial jobs Clare spend most of her time at her place down on the Great Ocean Road shooting and surfing in amazing locations like Indonesia and Hawaii.

My pirate Robbie, sent me an artist profile on each so here it is....

Eli Curry has lived on and around Phillip Island his entire life. His love for the ocean and

all it brings to life was passed on from his mum and dad, and his eye for photography

runs in the bloodlines. Surfing has taken him all around the globe, with his array of

photos testament to a life of adventure and experience, both at home and abroad.

Will Shea grew up in the Alpine areas of Victoria, before his love for the ocean brought

him to Phillip Island 10 years ago. His passion for writing started at a young age, and

has seen his work published in various magazines and newspapers in recent years. He

finds his inspiration in his love for travel and the ocean, mixed with a keen interest in

politics and sociology.

Josh Rufford is an extraordinary artist - working with a strong focus on drawing while maintaining a significant multiple-medium practice. He likes to draw, paint and animate working with pens, ink, acrylic, watercolours and any kind of found objects to create interesting visual compositions.
He works as a graphic designer/pre-press operator by day and freelance illustrator/animator by night.
Josh does these amazing post it note flick animations that are well worth a look, Super talented guy!
I have to give props to Josh for sending me the most detailed installation map, it's so amazing I almost think its worth exhibiting!
I'm a MASSIVE fan - as is my 13 year old son Dylan, I sent a message to Josh the other day saying - don't be surprised if you suddenly find you have a heap of 13 year old skater boy fans from Melbourne!
Josh creates a heap of characters - best to check out his site (which changes so its always interesting) to see them all - I just choose the budgie as they are a personal fav.
He also has a fan page on facey, check it out, and recently started up a page RuffBat Creative with his creative partner Rhiannon Claire McLay, I can only imagine the inspiration and colour in that household!

Ed Sloane - photographer, Surfer & Aquatic being

Ed Sloane's Doppelganger is most definitely Kurt Cobain but an aquatic version, I'm sure Jackie, Ed's lovely girlfriend would agree, although I believe she might just be a mermaid herself!

Sloane has an eye for a wave and a barrel and his images thrust you into an underwater would that even I would like to know

(and that's saying something coming from a girl who saw jaws and still believes it to be true)

He's a heart kinda kid and his images spell that - that's for sure!

Luke Taaffe - Artist, designer & Surfer

I recently read an interview about Luke Taaffe and something the Journalist said touched a cord with me about Luke as It's so very true about his character they said '...... this guy deserves an amount of undivided attention for the progress, passion, and determination to which he’s applied his creative skills over the past few years …' I only meet Luke Briefly (with Heywood at the Surface showroom) but that's the vibe I got, and subsequently through emails. he is so incredibly approachable, we feel so fortunate to be exhibiting Taaffe.

" My inspiration is an organic experience where I draw on my life's experiences around the ocean and surf.

I try to capture the beauty, power and terror that that the ocean can bring to our lives which in turn is showing my respect for it.

I feel there is a constant struggle of balance between man and the environment and I try and capture this through these isolated and almost dark scenes.

I guess this a reflection of how I have felt the last four years with the passing of my father. There is always a lot of colour within my work and that is because the coast is like a wonderland to me- ever changing and always beautiful.

I feel my work as an artist has only just begun and I'm excited and positive about the future"

Ryan Heywood Walked into the gallery a few weeks back, I took a moment, and shyly asked "are you Ryan Heywood" I totally knew it was Ryan, he has a pretty distinctive look - I was running through my mind the fact that only the day before, I had emailed a pitch to him, I was wondering if he was there, maybe because he got my pitch? so I said "Ryan did you get my email?" he was like "No, my mates and I where just next door having breakfast" I was like "no way"~!
(I was probably really animated when I said that)
We were both pretty stocked with the Synchronicity, I pretty much attached meaning to the fact that SURF bike POP would be a monster of a success - I'm a big fan of Heywood's work.
BUT, then he was like "hang on" and a few moments later in walked Luke Taaffe!
then I knew we where a monster! :)

The thing about Ryan Heywood is his perception. He sees things that regular people don’t. He has an eye for angles, levels and detail that escape the normal human being, his work is incredibly intuitive.

There's something dreamy about Heywood's work, that draws you in and makes you believe you where actually there the moment that frame was taken.

His fashion and portrait work is phenomenal, and his Surf portfolio is equally impressive

Heywood is represented by Nouvelle Vague in Venice California.

Peter Webb - Artist, Surfer & Total Legend

Peter Webb is one of the most reputed artists of the Board Culture; and one of the most underground. Johnny Abegg - Filmmaker & Pro Surfer

Johnny Abegg was one of the first Artists to get back to me when I did my big pitch.

With baited breath I waited to hear back from some of the top artists, illustrators, photographers and filmmakers in the local and international surf world, Johnny was right there within hours of my pitch, totally into our concept.

Johnny's film Two Weeks has just recently finished touring the country, a must see.

We will have Johnny and Matty Yeates limited edition experimental film “___” (zine & DVD) which was a finalist in the amstel surfilm festibal-2010 in Spain
( you can interpret your own title for “___” )

The film will be playing in our little special "film room" at Surface POP gallery during opening night of Surf bike POP exhibition and then during the extent of the exhibition and St Kilda Festival - it will also be available for sale.

Gerry Wedd walked into the gallery on the weekend, I was so excited I hugged him

I cant wait to receive these ceramic thongs made especially for SURF bike POP.

Gerry is well known for his thongs hes even had a book written about them, Gerry designed for Mambo back in the day, along with two of our other artists Reg Mombassa and Paul McNeil , but more about those two later.

Gerry work is really quite something, he is also a very funny man and a bloody good story teller!
