Surface artists - ilan.el lighting designer

kah-du at Surface waiting to be hung

ilan hanging his balls :)

 I Love synchronicity!
after the Treadlie launch the other night, Aaron and were cleaning up and there appeared a face in window, we opened the door and introduced ourselves and the next day  ilan.el lights were hanging in Surface POP's window, just-like-that!

ilanel's  passion for innovative design extends beyond the physicality of mere objects. Here, design is about experience - a philosophy that encompasses spatial relationships and the creation of touch points between people, artefact's and their evolving environments.

basically ilan el ROCKS!

Surface Artists - Voici Le BATTEUR - Here comes the drummer

Donovan Mann on asking can I please have a paragraph artists statement - this is what I got;

Sciolist. Bluff. Graphic. Humourist. Anarchic. Subtle. Hopeful. Wandering. Pretentious. Thoughtful. Logorrheic. Delicate. Prose. Histrionic. Instinctive. Bile. Lexiphanic. Thelemic. subversive. ultracrepidarian.

After some time on the on-line directory checking work meanings, I can say from what I know of Donovan, all is true (except maybe, well.... bile) - no surprises.

We will with the help of Donovan be launching his Design/Product/Brand on Thursday 25th November at Surface pop 6-8pm

you intrigued?

And.....my personal favourite

Surface Artists - Alice Rose - Clay, Sculptor, Painter

Monday is my catch up day, I was home blogging (as you do) my phone rang and on the other end was Alice ' I know your not open today but I'm here from NZ for two more days, and I really want to show you my work' - quick smart on my treadle I jumped, and off I rode to the space, I'm so glad I have my number on the door and 'available out of hours'!

Alice's Mirage vases arose from a drawing investigating form and pattern in light and dark. The vase explores the relationship between perspective and perception. By depicting a two dimensional image in three dimensional form, mirage vases appear to exist in a dimension of their very own. Being neither entirely two or three dimensional they seem to resist belonging to either.

Alice  say's 'When an object does not ‘fit’ in the environment, it is both immediately obvious and intriguing. If it persists in not behaving in context the effect may be called an Illusion. Although we may quickly recognise this illusional event as ‘real, not real’ at the same moment, the experience leaves us with a sense of having temporarily shifted our perception.'

Alice and I are very much on the same wave length and she 'gets' what we are trying to do with Surface and revisiting space, as she is doing the same in her work.
She also creates illusional vessels and sculptural works that explore form.

We are both excited and blessed to have such an experimental talent among our artists and she lives in Dunedin, Aroha!

Surface artists - Jessica Edgar

At Surface we are representing some highly talented Melbourne based Artists, we intend this portfolio to continue, move and grow - as we know that's the exciting vision that Surface holds.

At the space at the moment we have Jess Edgar her Photography is about light capture. Jess’ work is characterized by a close appreciation of natural everyday objects, heightened by her awareness from her Fine Arts & Interior Design education and a pursuit of capturing images with a minimum of post production. A successful image for Jess is one that captures the energy and composition of people and objects in such a way which pleases the eye with its overall sense of balance and colour. Jess has exhibited all over Australia and also New York

2010, saw Jess founding ‘Photography Night Walks’ a weekly event designed to inspire and build a community of like minded individuals to practice and collaborate in capturing images around Melbourne. This creation of a network for photography enthusiasts of all levels - http://jessicaedgarphoto.com/night-walks/

Aaron McKenzie - Perspex works

A finished product from Aaron McKenzie's wide media range of design/art/product, hand cut and painted perspex with some old sign writing tricks of the trade from days gone by trained in the old school manner, hand made recycled wood frame salvaged from the old State Library - what a talent, watch out for this one I have a feeling he's up an coming - and for the record - I'm not biased!

Aaron McKenzie - Perspex work

Marc Pascal - imagination extends beyond form

Something I truly love about Marc Pascal's work is his ability to trigger a personal memory through his use of colour and form, his work in lighting and his objects are so organic, natural, evolving, and spacious, its like he's picked my vision of the space I would like to create and made a light to hang from the celling with it!

I emailed Marc to ask him in all possibility if we could have some of his lighting in the showroom, he was so relaxed and supportive of our baby beginnings, regardless of his design fame, he was totally connected still to the process, our process, and the next day Aaron went to his studio in Thornbury to meet him, what an inspiration - and the result was a beautiful piece of organic pedant lighting that will be hanging from the Showroom/gallery roof - come and see - its a new range!

surface artists - Nicholas Jones - Book sculptor

Nicholas Jones is a Melbourne based sculptor who uses books and printed paper to make works which question the manner in which books are 'read. I just love love Nicholas work!
I was jumping with joy today when I received a phone call from Aaron this afternoon to tell me he had been to see Nick at his studio and we have some of his magical artwork for the showroom. I fall in love with Nicholas work 2 years ago, when he exhibited in an exhibition Aaron curated in own Studio and ever since have wanted to own one of these exquisite pieces of form, and design, now I get to see them everyday, oh unless you come and buy one!
