Surface LAUNCH..POPPED!

WOW!
what a night! what an incredible array of talent, a collaboration of many amazing designers and artists.

Aaron McKenzie - Glass art

Claypots sponsored the launch with drinks and an incredible tray of the most divine mussels that went down a treat, thanks to Renan for your support.

I managed to slip in a speech, thanking Rick from The Cool Room for his unwavering belief and support in us and his understanding of Aaron as an artist in his own right.  Also the Artists and Mariella from Art so Far for there incredible portfolio exhibited at the launch, a feast in so many ways.
Also all the designers that Surface has collaborated with, who also see our vision and whom we are so excited to have exhibit and sell in the showroom.

The night was so successful we even got a visit from the kids in blue, who I might add where not particularly inventive with the lines they had learned verbatim from police academy when the main issue was just a spill out of people onto the footpath, I didn't particularly love being called "Corey" by them for blogging or sending out an email - I was surprised they didn't see with open eyes the value of such a success in ST Kilda creativity or how to hold a decent adult conversation......  but none the less the word on the street was........ its not a REAL party until the p-o-l-i-c-e arrive!

 So here's a few pix of the night and the launch of the space;

lets engage, lets collaborate. lets shift the way we see space, whats next?

Jane Burton - Photographic Artist

What can I say!

Jane Burton's work is beyond a doubt some of the most exquisite photographic art Australia has ever exported and we are so excited to have a piece of hers at our opening launch/exhibition, Mariella DelConte our Curator from Art so far has done a fine job in establishing her portfolio that includes Jane Burton among many well established artists.

Our Launch is Friday October 29th from 6-9pm

Aaron McKenzie - Perspex works

A finished product from Aaron McKenzie's wide media range of design/art/product, hand cut and painted perspex with some old sign writing tricks of the trade from days gone by trained in the old school manner, hand made recycled wood frame salvaged from the old State Library - what a talent, watch out for this one I have a feeling he's up an coming - and for the record - I'm not biased!

Marc Pascal - imagination extends beyond form

Something I truly love about Marc Pascal's work is his ability to trigger a personal memory through his use of colour and form, his work in lighting and his objects are so organic, natural, evolving, and spacious, its like he's picked my vision of the space I would like to create and made a light to hang from the celling with it!

I emailed Marc to ask him in all possibility if we could have some of his lighting in the showroom, he was so relaxed and supportive of our baby beginnings, regardless of his design fame, he was totally connected still to the process, our process, and the next day Aaron went to his studio in Thornbury to meet him, what an inspiration - and the result was a beautiful piece of organic pedant lighting that will be hanging from the Showroom/gallery roof - come and see - its a new range!

Artist - Drasko Boljevic

Its been such an enlightening week at Surface - Mariella from Art so Far has been slowly organizing her artists and they have been bringing their works into the showroom/gallery to be exhibited for the Launch on Friday Oct 29th.
An artist I have admired for ages is Drasko Boljevic we have his piece 'Made in Japan' in the showroom gallery space right now, it looks amazing with Aaron McKenzie's small round perspective glass artworks, both these artists bring in this concept of the overall vision which I'm just loving seeing take shape, that thought of challenging the way we see space, and what is art? what is design? whats next!

Danny Cheung's 1984 Fishbowl

Life inside a goldfish bowl ain't a lot of fun without a little privacy!
The intention with 1984 was to create a true sense of abode for our beloved little friends; solid white walls and three generous (domed) portholes with views from the hallway to the living room.
The fishbowl was inspired by and takes its name from the novel 1984 by George Orwell.
The design is innovative in meeting the needs of a non-human species, a design which ironically engages our own instinctive curiosity. The domed portholes effectively create an ethereal magnifying lens for compelling entertainment. The fish use the opaque walls for refuge and peer out the windows when curiosity strikes."The futuristic fish home" by Danny Cheung.
The 1984 Fishbowl represent WORKSHOPPED's first foray into manufacturing and realises its core objective of assisting designers to move from prototype to production, turning ideas into a commercial reality; ready for the world stage.

We are pretty happy to have Sydney's WORKSHOPPED famous Danny Cheung's Fishbowl in the showroom at Surface - come down and have a look.
